Hearing Aid Fitting and Adjustment

Most hearing losses occur gradually and chances are that people slowly learn to adapt to reduced hearing, particularly as they get older. Some may not even be aware of what sounds are missing.

Hearing aid technology these days is designed to help get the most out of hearing. Very often, many first time users of hearing aids, after having one fitted by a hearing aid specialist,  immediately notice an improvement.  Others may take longer. However, there are many benefits to using a hearing aid and so perseverence may be the key.

Although initial sounds may seem a little strange, the ears soon become accustomed to not hearing the full spectrum of environmental and speech sounds. The key to improving hearing is to teach the brain and ears to hear once again. This is done by learning to identify the sounds which are not so clear at first.  Remember that the main purpose of wearing a hearing instrument is to improve the ability to hear and understand when someone is speaking.

The best advice is to not make quick judgements when  first wearing hearing aids about the way they work because some adjustment time is needed.

Simply learning how to identify simple sounds within the immediate environment is a good way to start, along with practising conversing with someone in a quiet place. Try keeping background noises to a minimum as they can be frustrating at first. It is a question of training the ear and the brain gradually to listen and recognize effectively in increasingly noisy environments. In other words, practiced focusing on what the person wants to hear will gradually allow hearing with an aid to become easier. Planning ahead of going on outings or trips to the park can also help.

While in conversation there are some things that can be done to help understanding.

  • Lip reading is a great way to understand as the eyes can supplement information to the brain.
  • Paying good attention to hand gestures which can emphasise the speaker’s message is another technique.

Be aware that hearing aids cannot put hearing back to normal but they can help adjust to everyday hearing needs which help in getting on with daily life.
